AU History:
”It's time to end this little masquerade. There ain't no 'Atlas', kid, never was.”
―Frank Fontaine
There once was an orphan boy in Caldera named Frank Fontaine. Frank was a smart young lad, but always seemed to be getting into trouble. So much trouble, in fact, that he ended up escaping the orphanage after attacking an employee there, and ran away to join a theater at the age of 10. From the three years he spent with them, he learned a significant amount of vital acting tips that remained very important for the rest of his life. Aaand that’s the important part of his childhood.
When he left the theater, young Frank was quickly swept into both poverty and the crime that goes with it. For twelve years he stole and swindled for a living, showing a master eye for detail that let him disappear by completely becoming someone else for as long as he needed to hide. One day he was a young man. One day he was old. For three weeks he was an eastern foreigner with a questionable grasp of English. Perfect.
But when people are this perfect at crimes, they tend to get cocky. And when they get cocky, things blow up in their faces. Such is the sad tale of young Frank Fontaine. When he turned twenty-five he decided he was ready for the big leagues. He was going to become the strongest enemy Caldera had ever seen, and take over the city just to show that he could.
His plan started small. He grew his allies, sweetened up his connections, built himself a little army. Even had a little war that he’d planned to destroy the city in its wake. It lasted about 24 hours, after about a year of planning, and worked about as well as a French revolution, but it was enough to make him a main target for law enforcement. So, abandoning his identity, allies and Pokemon, he fled into the wilderness and was never seen again.
Now, this is the story of a man named Atlas. At the fresh age of 28, he traveled out of his hometown of Oh-It’s-Too-Far-Away-You-Probably-Don’t-Know-It, leaving behind the memory of his deceased wife and child and bringing along his houndour Jack to forge a new life for himself. He’s a humble fisherman, but he’s very curious about the workings of this Union place. Maybe even bordering a bit past nosy.
And of course, Atlas is just a new face and a new voice for Frank Fontaine. He’s not going down in smokes this time. He’s sure he knows what to fix about his plan. He can do it properly, if he just has the time to pace it out…
Canon Personality:
“Once, he was just a menace, to be convicted and hung. But he always manages to be where the evidence isn't. He's the most dangerous type of hoodlum... the kind with vision.”
―Andrew Ryan
Now of course everyone in Rapture knows Atlas. Even if they’ve never met him, the propaganda posters and whispers on the street brim with truth. “WHO IS ATLAS?”, the posters ask. A savior, an everyman’s hero, a modern Christ. A messiah from god himself to take down the terrible evil that is Andrew Ryan, and secure a happy future for Rapture and its people.
As he describes himself, Atlas is a working-class immigrant from Dublin. He’s a gentle giant with a loving wife and a beautiful infant son, an average man like any in Rapture looking for a bright future in the glorious underwater city. He is humble but he is kind, and he knows the true worth lies in the people; this leaves him very willing to steal from the rich and give to the poor. He’s a bona fide Robin Hood.
Unfortunately for the citizens of Rapture, this isn’t his true form. This is a carefully crafted exterior aimed to lower defenses. And it works; a kind smile, a dollar given without reason, a firm handshake and a promise of a bright future goes a long way and no one knows this better than Frank Fontaine. On the inside he is a calculating criminal genius, a dishonorable New York gangster turned into the biggest crime boss in the city thanks to Ryan’s wonderful philosophies. And god, does he love it.
The true Fontaine is hungry for nothing more than power, and is willing to do just about anything to attain it. He lives by a “go big or go home” philosophy; given the opportunity to overthrow Ryan and own all of Rapture for himself, he chooses instead to escape from Rapture after Ryan’s death, taking the technologies of the city with him to the surface instead and using the chaos he spread in Rapture to force the whole world to kneel under him. His plans are always grandiose and he plans obscenely far ahead (his plan to squish Rapture under his foot was 14 years in the making when Jack killed him), accounting for every possibility to ensure they are successful. This coupled with a charming exterior and a willingness to tread on any toes in his path make him a very formidable opponent, even without Jack the Perfect Minion to help him.
AU Deviation:
“New face. I have a new goddamn face ― who'da thought? ... I gotta keep revising the Atlas voice. I figure the accent gives me an excuse to lock myself in a room with a bottle and count the cash.”
―Atlas?
The main difference thanks to the AU is that Fontaine is much younger. Instead of 40 he is now 28, and while he is definitely on the path he’s not exactly a kingpin yet. While still displaying psychopathic charm he’s a bit more reckless and cocky than his canon self; he was hit hard in the face by his failure in Caldera, but that serves to make him just a little more eager to prove himself than is strictly wise. Although this is by no means a big change, seeing as he is already a hardened criminal by the time of his arrival in Union.
His portrayal of Atlas is noticeably different from canon, though. Atlas isn’t a middle-aged man searching for the salvation of his family’s future. Atlas is a friendly but bitter young man who lost his very new family, and without them has lost his purpose. He’s a man to be pitied rather than strictly believed in as a hero. Part of this is because at the moment he has no goal in mind for Atlas’s story. Canon!Atlas was molded to be a man victimized by Andrew Ryan. BNW!Atlas has no enemies, and thus nothing to be molded to. His purpose is to find Fontaine new backscratchers and hide from the police, until he can find himself something to do. At which point he will decide Atlas’s purpose and goals.
On the other hand, Atlas’s darker side is largely the same. Fontaine has his deep-seeded sadism to nourish, after all. And that will show through once he has allies he truly trusts; a complete openness with how terrifying and malicious he can be just to prove he’s on top. Because this isn’t to win himself a city and made a million dollars destroying humanity. Well, that would be a bonus. But right now it’s just to prove to himself he has the power to cause the destruction he’s planning if he wants to.
Less importantly, his canon love of football is replaced with an interest in Earthkin Clash. He would never play it, but watching it gets his blood pumping.
Canon Abilities:
"All right, all right. You lookin' to slug it out? I'm game. But I got all 'the ADAM in the city, pal, and I ain't shy about usin' it. And now, I'm 'jake to take her out for a spin."
―Frank Fontaine
He has a particular affinity for acting, being able to become a completely different person if he so chooses. He has a psychopath’s skill in planning and working toward his own selfish goals, topped off with some basic knowledge of pretty much everything because he is the curious sort. He has a fair knowledge of fishing, especially, after running a fishing company for a very long while, and a lot of experience and knowledge in backstabbing, smuggling, torturing and killing. Presumably he’s pretty strong and knows how to work several types of guns.
He’s a very adaptive person, shown to only break character once or twice under very heavy pressure throughout the whole series. Once he has a set character in mind to portray, he plays them to a T and it takes a very observant person to notice the cracks in his disguise. More observant than some of the brightest in Rapture.
Also, it’s confirmed he knows how to perform a transorbital lobotomy as long as the point is to stab randomly at the victim’s frontal lobe until they either start giving him what he wants or get it destroyed. And he can hack machinery, at least enough to reprogram security bots to protect him instead of attacking him.
Also also, after splicing up like crazy in Point Prometheus, he sacrifices his good looks for the ability to shoot fire/ice/lightning balls and teleport at will. He becomes ridiculously overpowered, although not so much that Jack can’t kill him in the end. He also seems to be able to command splicers using pheromones, but that’s speculation. On the downside he doesn’t use those plasmids at any point before that, so he goes kind of crazy with them and ends up mutating to the point where he no longer looks human, but rather like a huge muscular copper statue of death.
Enlightened Abilities:
"I got ADAM flowin' into me, kid. You think you got power? You're 20 watts and I'm the lights of Broadway!"
―Frank Fontaine
Atlas’s special skill is God of War, and his types are Fire, Ice and Electricity.
As of now, his powers pretty lame since he rarely uses them. He might light a cigarette with his finger, power a lightbulb in a power outage or freeze his drink with a touch, but he doesn’t do much heavy combat if he can avoid it. However, he is capable of throwing out fireballs and freezing blasts, and shocking his enemies much like a weak hit of Thunderbolt. One of his fight moves of choice is to paralyze his enemy with electricity, and then hit them over the head with a blunt object. (“Zap ‘em, and whack ‘em – the one-two punch!”)
At his first evolution, Atlas will gain a noticeable increase in strength, as well as the force of his attacks. On top of a very heavy punch, he’ll be able to light enemies on fire with a snap of his fingers (a reverse upgrade from canon, where it goes from lighting foes on fire to throwing fireballs), freeze a solid block of ice around his enemies as well as make shields with it, and create chains of lightning passing through and shocking multiple enemies. He is in enough control of all of these to make some pretty elaborate torture mechanisms out of them.
At his second evolution, Atlas will be again noticeably stronger, and his attacks will reach the level of third-tier plasmids in canon. His attacks now include a jet of fire to be unleashed on enemies, a jet of ice shards that deal damage as well as freezing anything in its path, and a continuous electric arc that shoots lightning through anything in its path.
All of his electricity attacks carry a high chance of paralysis, in reference to how Electro Bolt’s main purpose in Bioshock is to shock enemies so they are easier to shoot.
Starter Pokémon: A male houndour named Jack. Though Atlas will tell others he is a family pet, Jack was in fact found in the forest during his year of straight-up hiding from society. Jack followed him around because he fed him treats. Now Jack is very defensive of and loyal to him and Fontaine loves it.
Notes/Special Considerations: Depending on how things go ICly he may try and start up a new gang for himself, but I suppose I’ve already discussed that with Wighty. No one has to worry until he finds something he really wants.
SAMPLES
(NOTE: You may link a previous entry or thread, including testrun or musebox threads (but NOT Dear Mun), for one or both samples. However, we want to see the character in the setting of Brave New World and specifically in their AU for at least one sample.)
First-Person: (Also known as “commentspam.” This is from the character’s perspective and helps us determine how well you grasp your character’s voice. The minimum is six sentences. If we deem that there is not enough spoken or written dialogue, we will ask you for more. If you link an outside entry or thread, the minimum is 10 comments from your character in one thread/with one character.)
Third-Person: (This is written in prose from an independent narrator’s perspective. Here we want to see an insight into your character’s unspoken behavior -- actions, thoughts, their view of their world, etc. The minimum here is two paragraphs. If we do not get a good sense of your character’s behavior, we will ask for more. If you link an outside entry or thread, the minimum is 20 comments from your character in two threads/with two characters.)
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie, the purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.
[Answered dishonestly as Atlas and honestly as Fontaine.]
-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
-What do you feel your role in Union is?
-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Atlas: Well, prosperity’s the best thing I could hope for it. I don’t know how much a humble man such as meself can help toward it, but I’ve seen kindness the likes o’ which I didn’t think possible over my lifetime. The more o’ that I can bring into the world… the less men who’ll end up quite like me.
Fontaine: Listen, who gives a crap about humanity? The whole species is goin’ in the shitter faster than any goody-two-shoes mook can stop it. Them gods everyone’s so hooked on really coulda done us a favor by wipin’ these sad saps off the planet… but I guess they left room for guys like me to get their claws in ‘em.
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Atlas: Now I may sound like a bit of a sap here… but I’d rather lose an eye than one o’ my pals. O’ course, I don’t see meself as a reckless sort, y’understand – I wouldn’t go after ‘em without help. Savior knows I’d probably need it.
Fontaine: If they got lost that’s their own problem, ain’t it? Don’t seem worth my goddamn time if they can’t make their way out of a damn forest or somethin’. That’s life.
-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
Atlas: I can’t say… everyone’s addin’ their own strengths t’what they are. The Union wouldn’t work the way it does without every job we’ve got, now would it?
Fontaine: I don’t give a lick about the Union. What’s important is my job – the one that’s bringin’ me straight to the top. And I don’t gotta worry about anyone’s job but mine; there’s always gonna be guards and professors and trainers, it don’t matter much what I think of ‘em. Although, hah… that might change if I start really gettin’ on top o’ things around here.
-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
Atlas: Well, it’s an inspiration, t’be sure. Never been a church-goin’ man meself, but me wife Moira was. And a right pain in the neck she was if I took what we had for granted. … I s’ppose I got my proof t’listen to her a bit late. Anyway, if I had t’say, I’d say the Savior’s the sort o’ person I’d want t’be if I had the chance. But I doubt there’ll be a need for anything as grand as things are now.
Fontaine: Yeah, okay the whole religion bit, hah… I can’t believe anyone really buys that ol’ song and dance. Gods ain’t brought nothin’ down on us in my lifetime, and the Savior’s just some story made up to rope people into this whole ‘good o’ the Union’ bullcrap. The moment somethin’ proves me wrong, I’ll get down on my knees and pray. Until then, signin’ onto this bit’s just another way to get Atlas friends.
-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Atlas: Not sure… a good head on the shoulders, I s’ppose. But there’s somethin’ else, deeper… me boy Jack and I’ve got a real connection, y’understand. Somethin’ I’m not sure how t’describe in words. I just… knew he had a good heart, when I ran across him.
Fontaine: Long as the thing can follow orders and keep quiet, I ain’t real picky about anything else. Except strength. I’m not runnin’ a loser’s team here. [A pause, and then a chuckle.] Gotta admit, though, I got a bit of a soft spot for Jack. He ain’t the strongest, but with a bit o’ training no doubt he’ll toughen up.
-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
Atlas: Defend the Pokemon, o’ course! What’s this man doin’ attackin’ some poor creature and thinkin’ it’ll turn out well for him? Might as well roast the bastard now for all the good he’s doin’ humanity.
Fontaine: Let ‘em fight, it ain’t my business. Long as they ain’t in my way, I don’t gotta do nothin’ to stop either of ‘em, do I?
-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
-You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
Atlas: That world’s dead, ain’t no salvagin’ it. But there’s no denyin’ some o’ their technology could come in handy these days. Can’t say I’d object t’searchin’ for that.
Fontaine: Don’t see much o’ value comin’ outta that heap o’ junk, but you never know - there might be somethin’ anyway. Hell, anythin’ I can sell to the right person’ll make it worth the trip. And the best bet for that’s old-school technology. Hmm… guess a tip or two in the way o’ wisdom can’t hurt either. Nothin’ better than learnin’ from the fuck-ups of others, huh?
-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
-What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
-What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?
-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
Both, for decidedly different reasons: Lettin’ opportunities slide by.
-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
Atlas: I’m at peace with what I’ve got, but I s’ppose I wouldn’t mind havin’ a bit… less. If I’ll be honest I’m not sure I deserve all the heat I’ve got in my corner.
Fontaine: Atlas might be the sorta sap that says he ain’t worthy o’ what he’s got, but I… well, I don’t mind it one bit. Hell, if I had it my way I’d be manifestin’ every goddamn power there is. If I ain’t got no choice in bein’ a freak anyway…
-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
